Description

…. Or “After the storm” - Part 1.

This artwork represents the one half of a mural I was commissioned to paint for the paleontology section of the currently under construction Science Center for Kids “Muzeiko”, that will open in Sofia (Bulgaria) in summer 2015 ( www.facebook.com/muzeikobulgar… ). The mural centers on life-sized reconstruction of the hypothetical Bulgarian ornithomimosaur*, from which only a partial humerus is known, but also included are more contemporary tetrapods known from equally scarce remains (those animals are depicted on the other half of the mural). Thus I like to think about this mural as “probably-the-most-speculative-piece-of-paleoart-to-appear-in-educational-institution-of-any-sort”.

For more information on why the ornithomimosaur looks the way it looks, please check this link - t-pekc.deviantart.com/art/The-… . There is absolutely no data on what the terrestrial plant life during latest Cretaceous on the territory of Bulgaria was, thus all of the vegetation depicted here is based on information from the Hateg basin of Romania. Still, the plants showed in this painting are just generic representatives of the groups presented in the latest Cretaceous of Romania, and not the exact same taxa.

Due to the large size of the mural and the inability to paint it directly on the walls, the actual artwork is done in scale 1:4 and only later digitally enlarged to meet the needed size.

Size: 32.9 cm (height for the small side) x 72.1 cm x 70.5 cm (height for the big side)

Medium: Acrylics on cardboard

Done: March 2014

This image is photo taken by professional photographer, as part of the digitizing process, which was later digitally edited by me on Photoshop CS2. The image that will be enlarged and put on the walls of the science center will be edited and prepared for print by the folks at POSTSTUDIO, Sofia (Bulgaria) poststudio.bg/prototype/index.… .

*The thought of not only life reconstruction, but a life-sized reconstruction is really amusing given the fact that everything that’s known from this dinosaur is ~9 cm long piece of its humerus.
